What makes me a strong black woman

Poem by Maila Nghidinwa

Is it the dark skin that even when washed
will never get white
Is it my natural rasta hair
that will never change
surely what makes me a strong black woman
will make me a strong business woman

they call me rasta on the street
because of my hair style
because of my slow reaction to fashion
they call me old fashioned

my people have begun to worry
because of my hair style
my character and mind have not changed
I am still the same person you used to know

I always thought I was black
I have no doubt in my skin colour
I think its alright to maintain black beauty
I never knew being black was a crime

surely what makes me a strong black woman
will make me a strong business woman

they call me uneducated
and always do wrong things
but somehow, along the line, I am coping

they say I will need a manager from overseas
to run my business
that’s what I get told every day

surely what makes me a strong black woman
will make me a strong business woman
